Book Review: Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews

Title: Magic Bites

Author: Ilona Andrews

Review:

I'm a sucker for strong female characters and Kate never disappoints. For lovers of fantasy, this won't disappoint, but if you like mysteries and romance jump in too! The story takes place in Atlanta, but the entire world has had to deal with the fall of technology. Magic and tech swing, like a pendulum. With the advent of the human race, magic receded until technology became too prevalent. Magic  returned to the world--with a vengeance.

Now we live in a place when the tech swings to magic your sweet, little grandmother can turn into a banshee. If you report the occurrence to the wrong people;  she might just be deemed a threat and killed. This is the world that Kate exists in and balancing her beliefs against those in the world around her, in addition to fighting the instinct to stay hidden, something she's been taught her entire life . . . well Kate has a lot to learn.

I loved this book because of Kate, but also the world is rich and detailed, without bogging you down in so many details you want to go do something else. Derek, a lovable teenage shapeshifter becomes Kate's sidekick, despite her best efforts to work alone and Curran, the Beast Lord, master of all shapeshifters in Atlanta, has Kate bristling and ready to fight him at any moment. Not the greatest political move.

And somewhere, in the middle of this mess someone killed her guardian. If Kate doesn't figure it out fast, all hell will break loose between the shape-shifters and the vampires that may just start a deadly war.

All in all, a great ride that completely satisfies, but leaves you wanting more of Kate and her world.

Quick Review: 4 out of 5 stars (the only reason I didn't give five is because I've read the sequels and they just keep getting better and better! I'll be reviewing those soon.)

Synopsis:

Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren’t for magic… One moment magic dominates, and cars stall and guns fail. The next, technology takes over and the defensive spells no longer protect your house from monsters. Here skyscrapers topple under onslaught of magic; werebears and werehyenas prowl through the ruined streets; and the Masters of the Dead, necromancers driven by their thirst of knowledge and wealth, pilot blood-crazed vampires with their minds.

In this world lives Kate Daniels. Kate likes her sword a little too much and has a hard time controlling her mouth. The magic in her blood makes her a target, and she spent most of her life hiding in plain sight. But when Kate’s guardian is murdered, she must choose to do nothing and remain safe or to pursue his preternatural killer. Hiding is easy, but the right choice is rarely easy…
